Bills have been introduced in both houses of the Maryland Legislature this year that would go a long way to improve recycling rates for beverage containers (plastic, glass and aluminum).
Current estimates are that, despite the recycling programs currently in place, only about 25% of these containers are actually recycled. The rest of these containers unfortunately end up in landfills, incinerators, or, worst of all, along our roads and eventually in our waterways. Plastic breaks down into micro and nano-plastics that have unknown effects on humans and other species.
The Maryland Bottle Bill (HB 232/SB 364) would set up a deposit program where customers would pay a small deposit when they purchase a beverage, which would be refunded when the container was returned.
Bottle bill programs have been shown in other states to increase recycling rates up to 90%. This means reducing the need to manufacture virgin plastic, glass, and aluminum, all of which use energy and cause pollution.
Please let your state senator and delegate know that you support this bill. In my case, I will be contacting Sen. Johnny Mautz and Del. Tom Hutchinson.
