The U.S. Navy has a significant cultural role in the Chesapeake region. An obvious source of that is the Naval Academy in Annapolis. But there is also Pax River Naval Air Â鶹´«Ã½ and the Norfolk naval base. There are many naval officers and navy civilians who have retired on the Eastern Shore. I am one, and I’m concerned something terrible is happening to the U.S. Navy.
The Navy is now killing people without any legal justification. Even worse, they are targeting survivors of the attacks. During World War II, we rescued survivors after attacks. The Germans who machine-gunned survivors from sinking Merchant Marine ships were condemned as war criminals. The worst of the worst. Now the U.S. Navy does the same.
This devastates me. I don't know how the sailors carrying out these orders feel, but it can't be good. I hope none are proud of following orders to kill survivors in the sea issued from a disgraceful secretary of defense. As with so many institutions under Donald Trump, it is now the Navy’s turn to be dishonored. It is sad.
