ST. MICHAELS — The summer tourism season comes to an end after Labor Day. For multiple businesses in St. Â鶹´«Ã½, it could mean a slow down in business.
Businesses in St. Â鶹´«Ã½ are preparing for the fall and winter months by cutting back on some costs.
“It’s something that we know is coming every year,†Craig Schury, owner of Pemberton Pharmacy & Gift St. Â鶹´«Ã½, said. “This year has been a little more difficult than most, so we’re prepared. We pair down our staff a little bit and we try to keep our merchandise pretty tight. If we control those cost, we know we can be alright.â€
According to some business owners in St. Â鶹´«Ã½, this year’s tourism season has not been as good as previous years. While data specific to this year’s tourism in St. Â鶹´«Ã½ is not yet available, domestic tourism nationally has seen a slow down.
According to Bank of America, their aggregated card data showed softer lodging, tourism and airline spending in 2025.
Some St. Michales businesses plan shift merchandise to fit with upcoming seasons in hopes of keeping revenues up.
“We have less families in the fall, more couples, more anniversaries, more getaways, baby moons once the kids are back in school,†said Courtney James, manager for The Preppy Redneck store.
“So, it’s a different vibe in that a lot of people stop on their way to the beach in the summer and they have more families. Boating season also goes into October. So, a lot more people when it’s cooler come out on their boats, um, which is a different vibe too. Each one brings kind of a different vibe.â€
While the shift in merchandise and savings is key for business, the one major factor business owners hope to continue to see during the fall and winter months is support from the local community.
“It’s paramount,†said Jay Hudson, owner for Blue Heron Coffee. “We’re here for the community, so having the community support throughout the winter means the world. I look at the community as more of the sustainable business model, they’re here every day, so their support means all the world. Tourism kind of comes and gos, but to have the community support, not just through the winter, just in general, means the world to a business.â€
