CHESTER Queen Anne's County citizens and businesses will provide
Christmas for 1,200 of its youth this year through the Adopt-A-Bear
program.
The last day to drop gifts at area locations was Dec. 6, but the
program is still in need of unwrapped presents and monetary
donations to cover children not adopted.
Volunteers shopped and wrapped gifts for the remaining children,
who weren't adopted, nearly 600 in the four-county program last
year.
It takes at least $50 to $75 per child to provide just the
basics such as coat, warm clothes and a toy or two.
Last year, some was covered by monetary donations, the rest was
charged. The program just recently paid off the bill from last
year, said coordinator Heather Tinelli.
With an even slower economy this year, she and other
coordinators anticipated an even more unmanageable number of
unadopted children in Caroline, Talbot, Kent and Queen Anne's
counties.
In an effort to save the program, which originated in Queen
Anne's, they decided to return to its roots.
"We were faced with the decision of no program or a smaller
program," said Tinelli. "We decided to just handle Queen Anne's
this year, where it started."
The program is coordinated through the Queen Anne's County
Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Foundation for
Community Partnerships. Even as the program grew to the other
counties, coordination remained in Queen Anne's, so there will be
no change in management, Tinelli said.
Families are invited to participate in the program if they
qualify for the free and reduced lunch program through the county's
public school system. The number of respondents is up 50 percent in
Queen Anne's County, from 800 last year.
The entire number served in four counties last year was
2,000.
Unwrapped gifts may be dropped off at the Chamber of Commerce on
Postal Road in Chester by Dec. 8.
Monetary donations are accepted all year long, but the sooner
the better, said Tinelli. They may be mailed to P.O. Box 553,
Stevensville, MD 21666. Because of the association with Foundation
for Community Partnerships, all donations are tax-deductible.
