Cordova — Cancer survivors Larry and Donna Albright welcomed Chesapeake Bay Balloon and Wine festival visitors in their three-acre parcel of sunflowers this past weekend, with proceeds benefitting a cancer related charity.
Last year, the festival’s visitors were vying for the sunflowers for photo opportunities, but couldn’t be accommodated due to privacy reasons.
Owners of Triple Creek Winery, Taylor and Margo Spies, and sons Corey, Paul and Alex, worked with the Albrights to relocate the sunflowers to an area more accessible to visitors.
“For a $5 donation, we offered photos in the sunflowers,†Donna Albright said. “For an additional $5 [visitors] could cut a fresh sunflower as a souvenir. We told them there was one rule — they had to have fun!â€
Visitors took the “obligatory†prom photo, the “glamour shot,†hand on hip, looking over the shoulder, the “ta-da†photo, and men were told to “kiss the pretty lady.â€
“Several people did not need prompting,†Donna Albright said. “I think the volunteers and I had as much fun taking the photos!â€
By the weekend’s end, $1,800 was raised, benefitting local cancer patients and their families with transportation to treatments and other expenses.
“People enjoyed themselves so much they made additional donations,†Donna Albright said. “We look forward to doing this again next year.â€
Larry Albright is a cancer survivor of 20+ years, Donna Albright is a cancer survivor of 10+ years, and Margo Spies is a Nurse Educator at the Cancer Center in Easton.
“I was proud to be named the Honorary Co-Chair for this year’s Colors of Cancer Gala, along with fellow survivor, Dr. Michael Fisher,†Donna Albright said.
Albright said she asked Colors of Cancer co-chairs, Michelle Potter Williams and Dawn Potter Cecil, for the help of volunteers.
“They, along with Dawn’s husband, Ricky, and son, Patrick, and committee members, Stephanie Guiles and Dawn Henckel, were immediately on board,†Donna Albright said.
Albright also requested to borrow two of the giant wooden sunflowers in front of Robin’s Nest Floral and Garden Center, from owners Kenny and Emma Jean Morgan.
“They also generously donate all of the flower arrangements and corsages for the Gala,†Donna Albright said.
Volunteers included Dawn, Patrick and Ricky Cecil, Michelle Williams, Bernadette Brelia, Shantel Matthews, Dawn Henckel, Michelle Wallace, Susan Davis, Jan Falcey, Stephanie Guiles,
“Larry and I couldn’t ask for better neighbors than the Spies family,†Donna Albright said. “We are already planning next year’s event.â€
