The recent announcement of $50 billion worth of investments into Pennsylvania by a variety of technology companies raises the question for Maryland residents of where does our state stand in the competition to attract new private investment.
According to news reports, both of Pennsylvania’s senators and its governor have spent meaningful time working to make the state attractive to AI investors, energy expansion and other pillars of private economic growth. Apparently Pennsylvania efforts have been successful.
Meanwhile, without similar media reports it’s woefully unclear what Maryland leaders have done or are doing to make our state attractive to private capital. In fact, with Maryland’s threatening budget deficit and Wes Moore’s focus on presidential ambitions it’s difficult to see how we can compete with Pennsylvania or any other state for future capital commitments.
It’s good the Ravens are competitive with the Steelers, but it’s more important that Baltimore does not appear to be holding a candle to Pittsburgh in a competition for private enterprise.
