AMERICAN CORNER — One game.
That was the grand sum total of victories for Hurlock during the Colonel Basketball Association Summer League’s six-game regular season.
Hurlock earned a pair of postseason victories though, and narrowly missed a third Wednesday night, before Enoch Dupri’s free throw with 1.3 seconds remaining lifted Seaford (Delaware) to a 48-47 victory in the league championship at Colonel Richardson High’s Merrill Morgan Gymnasium.
“We’ve come a long way this summer,†said Hurlock head coach John Ridenour, an assistant for North Dorchester High’s varsity. “I mean we won one game before the playoffs started and we came out and won two, and took Seaford to the brink. It would have been nice.â€
Like Stevensville and Saints Peter and Paul, Hurlock finished the regular season 1-5, but earned the fifth seed for the playoffs based on its margin of victory in its one win. Hurlock knocked off No. 4 seed Ridgely on Monday, then upset unbeaten top-seed and defending league champion Federalsburg, 47-38, in Wednesday’s first semifinal.
Seaford reached the final via its 54-34 win over third-seeded Centreville in the second semifinal. The Blue Jays looked ready to turn the title game into a waltz, building a 17-7 lead after the first quarter, and stretching that edge to 39-25 midway through the third.
But Hurlock steadily began whittling its deficit, starting with Tajir Pritchett’s bucket with 4:30 left in the third. Wyatt Barone (12 points), who plays for St. Â鶹´«Ã½ High, scored on a follow. Tyrone Smith (game-high 16 points) scored on a drive then hit 3 of 4 foul shots, capping a 9-0 quarter-closing run that pulled Hurlock within 39-34 heading into the fourth.
“To be honest, we came in here with the expectation of playing Colonel Richardson (Federalsburg) in the championship game,†Seaford head coach Vince Evans II said. “I think once we realized it wasn’t them, I don’t think we played up to our expectations and kind of went through the motions. If we do that during the (high school) season that’s going to cost us.â€
It almost cost Seaford on this night.
Smith sank a free throw and scored on a finger roll, trimming Seaford’s lead to 39-37 early in the fourth. Seaford’s Taj Bacon hit a 3-pointer. But Barone, who seemingly got stronger and stronger on both the offensive and defensive boards as the game progressed, scored inside, getting Hurlock within 42-39 with 7 minutes left.
Brendan West converted a Vince Evans feed to nudge Seaford’s lead to 44-39. Again Barone, who netted eight fourth-quarter points, responded inside. Sammy Robinson’s follow restored the Blue Jays’ five-point lead at 46-41 with 2:40 left. Barone made a put-back and Smith scored on a drive, drawing Hurlock within 46-45 with 2 minutes to play.
“The guys just fought,†Ridenour said. “They played hard and that’s all I asked of them is give it their all.â€
Ridenour also acknowledged having played the first semifinal allowed his players to rest while Seaford started its second game about 10 minutes after its semifinal victory.
“We got a break in between games,†Ridenour said. “To be honest I think it helps sometimes having a smaller seven; seven, eight guys. It’s easier to maneuver and you can see what rotations are working a little better.â€
Dupri (team-high 12 points) converted one of two from the foul line for a 47-45 Seaford lead with 56 seconds left. Barone’s turnaround jumper tied it at 47-all with 37.3 seconds to go. Seaford called timeout with 15.6 seconds left. Dupri was fouled in the chaotic closing seconds and hit the first of two free-throw attempts with 1.3 seconds left.
Confusion about how much time was left ensued and officials decided 2 seconds should be put on the clock. But Jayden Turner’s three-quarter court desperation heave hit a ceiling beam, ending the game.
“Credit to them because they played hard,†coach Evans said of Hurlock. “They struggled throughout the league, but hats off to North Dorchester for playing hard, for knocking off Colonel. And they should have beat us. They played a lot harder than we did.â€
Notes: Evans, the coach’s son, finished with 10 points for Seaford, which ended the season 8-1. … Hurlock finished 3-5. Federalsburg, which was minus some key players Wednesday, finished 6-1.
