CAMBRIDGE — City Council member Brian Roche is on a mission to make the streets of Cambridge safer with a new roll-out of traffic safety pilot programs.
The city introduced the pilot programs in 2021. The programs effectively curbed traffic hazards in targeted areas through raised crosswalks, four-way stop signs and bump-outs also known as curb extensions.
After continued complaints regarding traffic concerns, council members plan on tackling the issue through another round temporary pilot programs that may become permanent if effective.
“A majority of our emails are about traffic calming needs,†said council member Brett Summers.
Each council member identified two to three areas of concern in their ward at the council’s meeting Monday. Roche then compiled the information from council members and residents into a spreadsheet that lists the streets and intersections of concern along with a map that pinpoints those locations.
Some of the areas identified by the City Council include Robin Street at the intersection of Pine and Center streets, Stone Boundary Road and Route 16, and a multiple others.
Council members expressed major concern over lighting issues on Route 16, which is owned and maintained by the state. The council has provided the state with a resolution to this issue, but has not received a response. The council did not say what that resolution is.
At the next regular City Council meeting on June 9, council members will vote to determine which areas will be the best candidates for the pilot program.
