WYE MILLS — A collision Monday, Jan. 28, claimed the life of Leslie Ann Close, 55, of Crownsville, when her 2014 Hyundai Elantra rear-ended a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by Deborah Lynn Herron, 67, of Easton.
The Maryland State Police responded at 5:55 p.m. to the crash at the U.S. Route 50 and state Route 213 intersection near Chesapeake College.
The preliminary investigation, by Trooper Tori Bertrand, indicated Herron was stopped at the light at the intersection of Route 50 and Route 213.
Close was traveling in the same lane on Route 50 prior to Route 213.
Police said Close failed to control speed to avoid a collision, causing her Elantra to hit Herron’s Explorer in the rear and then come to a stop in the next lane.
Herron was taken to University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton for treatment; Close was taken to the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center in Queenstown, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Route 50 east was closed about four hours for the investigation, reconstruction and cleanup.
The State Highway Administration assisted in the road closure.
