OXFORD — During Oxford Town Manager Cheryl Lewis’ final week before retirement, the Town of Oxford announced its next town manager.
Michael Calvert will be taking on the role. Calvert will be sworn in on July 9 at a Commissioners of Oxford meeting, according to a June 24 news release from the town.
In an interview, Commission President Tom Costigan said Calvert has the “full support†of the commissioners. He said the hiring process was a long one with several candidates, but Calvert was the right person for the job.
Calvert, who has a Master of Public Administration and Bachelor of Arts in political science from Penn State University, has experience as a city administrator for Liberty, South Carolina. In the role, Calvert was responsible for developing and implementing policies, managing budgets and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, according to the news release.
“Michael’s extensive experience and dedication to public service makes him a valuable addition to our community,†the news release says. “His proven track record in enhancing efficiency, fostering community development, and ensuring quality and impact of municipal services positions him as an excellent leader for Oxford.â€
Along with his experience as a city administrator, Calvert has served as a congressional staff member, and he has served on state and local agency administrations. According to the release, these roles gave Calvert experience in project management, disaster recovery and emergency management.
Costigan said he is excited to have Calvert join the town, and he said Calvert’s “extensive experience†with emergency management will be beneficial.
Calvert will receive a salary of $120,000 for the position, Costigan said.
Calvert will take over the role of town manager from Lewis, who announced her plans for retirement in February. Lewis was hired as town clerk in 2012 and was later promoted to town manager. Her last day will be June 30.
