EASTON — Dixon House employees recently participated in Mental Health First Aid Training, a new curriculum specifically targeted at the mental health needs of the aging population and offered by the Mental Health Association in Talbot County.
“The intent of the training is to increase the understanding of the mental health issues affecting the older adult population and to equip people who work with the elderly to provide stronger support to these individuals and families,†said Jackie Davis, executive director of the MHATC.
Mental Health First Aid is a nationally recognized, evidence-based training designed to bring awareness and understanding of mental health illnesses to the community. The goals of MHFA include an increase in mental health literacy, a decrease in stigmatizing attitudes, and appropriate and early help for people with mental health problems.
“Our employees found the training to be useful in helping them to better empathize with people with mental illness,†said Linda Elben, executive director of Dixon House.
As participants of the training, Dixon House employees learned the signs and symptoms of mental health disorders in older adults and how to assist a person experiencing a disorder or crisis until professional help arrives.
The training was offered with support from the Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Charitable Foundation Inc.
