CAMBRIDGE — Every Wednesday, a group of local artists from a diverse set of mediums and backgrounds comes together to share their latest creations. This segment of their meetings is called “brings and brags.â€
Twenty years ago, the group began meeting at the Dorchester Center for the Arts when it was still in the historic home on High Street. They then relocated to a deli inside of a strip mall, which didn’t survive the pandemic. The loyal members began meeting at a park until finding their spot at Peach Blossom Place.
“It’s a beautiful building,†the group’s leader Susan Lester said. “We’ve had a wonderful experience being here.â€
The Wednesday Morning Artists are an eclectic group, who bring their unique skillsets together in mixed-media collaborative pieces, one of a kind oil paintings and an array of other media. On the fourth Wednesday of the month, there is a live art demonstration that often includes hands-on participation.
The group is led Lester with support from Robert Gladney and Nancy Hoffman. The members also showcase their work outside of “brings and brags†at the Hyatt Regency on Saturdays during the summer, at community events like Taste of Cambridge and at pop-up art events around town.
Lester said her favorite part about the Wednesday Morning Artists is learning and collaborating with the members. “The fact that we’re so diverse, we have such a range of artists, I never even heard of some of the stuff they do,†she said.
The wide range of art forms include weaving, pine needle coiling, jewelry designing, photography, sculpting, music, woodcarving and the more traditional forms of art like oil painting and pottery.
“We have pine needle weavers, who knew? I never heard of that,†Lester said. “You know, when you think of art, you think of acrylics or oils or watercolors, and it’s way beyond that.â€
The group has also created fellowship outside of Wednesday morning, enjoying monthly dinners and an annual fall picnic at Gerry Boyle Park.
Lester said they are always accepting new members. “And trust me, we don’t judge based on level of experience,†she said. “Pros, beginners, we want you all, and we’ll help you learn how to do it or you can help us learn.â€
