GREENSBORO — At around 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Town of Greensboro received a call about sewage water in the road on Route 313 and Bridgetown Road, town officials said.
Upon arrival, Greensboro Public Works found a sewer main pipe break on Bridgetown Road. Greensboro Town Manager Cindy Yost said the sewer line is connected from Greensboro to Goldsboro. Friday evening, she said the town had asked Goldsboro residents to use less water while repairs were underway.
“We’ve had to go in and shut down the pump station to Goldsboro, and hopefully that’ll keep it from coming forward,†Yost said. “Then we’ve got some trucks coming in, too, to help with that load. So, hopefully we can manage that with Goldsboro and not create any issues for them at the current time.â€
She said the town hoped to have the issue resolved by the morning.
After investigation, the town discovered that a subcontractor from Sure Shot Drilling was boring on the property. Yost said the subcontractor hit the main sewer pipe, then covered the pipe with plywood, put an orange flag around the pipe and left the scene without contacting the town.
According to Yost, the town contacted Sure Shot Drilling after discovering the break, and the company said workers had contacted Miss Utility, the company responsible for marking the location of power lines, sewer lines and water lines ahead of construction work.
The town manager said Sure Shot Drilling officials told her the area was not marked, so the contractor boring in that area was unaware the pipe was there.
Sure Shot Drilling could not be reached for comment due to the office being closed at the time the Star Democrat called.
Yost said the town was not contacted by Miss Utility ahead of Friday’s construction work and was unaware of boring being done in the area that day.
“This is a huge sewer main. We should have been contacted. We were not,†Yost said. “So, right now we’ve got emergency crews out here. We’ve got our local police out here on the road. We’ve called MDE because of the sewage going into the creek. So, we’re hoping that we can get this fixed tonight.â€
